Asking Your Doctor

One key to maintaining good control of your diabetes is to have an open, informative relationship with your doctor. One topic that your doctor can discuss with you is the importance of postprandial glucose.

Postprandial glucose (PPG) testing and what it tells you.

You're most likely very aware about the need to test your blood glucose level on a regular basis. There is a certain kind of testing, however, that measures your blood glucose level AFTER you eat a meal. This is called postprandial glucose testing.

Many people with diabetes have increases (commonly referred to as "spikes") in their blood glucose levels after their meals. By testing your glucose level after you eat, you can better determine how that meal has affected your blood glucose. It also gives you and your doctor valuable information to adjust your treatment, if necessary. Talk to your doctor about PPG testing and how it might help you better manage your diabetes.
