Checking your blood glucose gives you important information to help manage your diabetes safely. A number of recent diabetes studies have shown that well controlled blood glucose levels can reduce your risk of developing certain long term diabetes-related complications.

Monitoring helps you help yourself.

It can be helpful to think of blood glucose monitoring as a check, and not a test. You can't pass or fail a blood glucose check. That's because all of your results give useful information - and no matter what the result, they help you get to the vital information you need to help manage your diabetes safely.

Managing your blood glucose isn't about success or failure. It's all about using information to maintain your health and well-being. Sometimes it's about finding out why you feel the way you do.

Out-of-range blood glucose levels are common. The key is to try to keep close to your target blood glucose as much as possible.

Use your blood glucose monitoring information to see when, how often, and by how much your blood glucose varies from your target range. Try to see patterns of out-of-range blood glucose. Then work with your healthcare team to try to reduce the frequency of high and low blood glucose levels.

You may need to rethink your meal plan, get more regular exercise, or change some of your habits.
