10 Tips to Help You Stay in Control of Your Blood Glucose

  1. Check your blood glucose as often as you need to, with the advice of your doctor or diabetes-care team.
  2. Talk to your doctor or diabetes-care team about what your goals for your blood glucose monitoring should be.
  3. Know your HbA1c level and what it means. Talk to your doctor or diabetes care team about what your goals for your HbA1c level should be.
  4. Get regular physical activity, under the guidance of your doctor or diabetes-care team.
  5. Take medications as prescribed.
  6. Eat foods to help you keep your blood glucose under control. See your doctor or a nutritionist to create a meal plan that's right for you.
  7. See your doctor or diabetes educator if your blood glucose readings don't seem to be accurate.
  8. Ask your doctor about postprandial glucose (PPG) testing and what it can tell you about your diet and diabetes management.
  9. Keep a log of your blood glucose monitoring results
  10. Think of blood glucose monitoring as a check, and not a test. You can't pass or fail a check, and no matter what the results, you've succeeded in getting information to help you manage your diabetes.
